Advice

You can easily spend a lot of time in New York standing in line. This is often unnecessary. Avoid the Empire State Building during the day. It is open late and is usually empty. Skip the Statue of Liberty tour. The Staten Island Ferry goes right past Lady Liberty! Avoid the Guggenheim on Monday as it is one of the only museums open that day. Also, buses and taxis are the slowest way to go crosstown during rush-hour. You are often better off walking or taking the subway.

Entertainment - Broadway

Broadway is famous for its shows and musicals. TKTS online offers tickets for shows the same night at discounted prices. TKTS has two offices, one at Times Square with lines hours long, and a much faster one at South Street Seaport. Only cash is accepted at South Street.

Food

You can find almost every type of food imaginable in New York. There are thousands of restaurants to suit all tastes and budgets. However, be wary of restaurants around Times Square or near the Empire State Building - many are tourist traps.

Credit cards

While most restaurants accept credit cards, some smaller restaurants, particularly in Chinatown and Williamsburg, do not. Others have a minimum purchase amount for credit/debit cards.

Tipping

Here is some helpful information on tipping: Hairdressers: 15-20%, Bartenders: $1 per drink or 15-20% of total, Food delivery: $2-5, 15-20% for larger orders, Tour guides $5-$10, Taxis: Tips of 10-20% are expected in yellow cabs. Always tip more for better service (for example, if the cabbie helps you with your bags). Leave a small tip if the service is lousy (for example, if the cabbie refuses to turn on the air conditioning). For livery cabs, tip 10-20% depending on the quality of the service..
